The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints holds this book to be part of their four books of scripture. According to title page, Joseph Smith Jr. translated the book by the power of the Holy Ghost using an implement presented to him called a urim and thummim which was a divination instrument reported to have existed during Old Testament times and was associated with priestly authority and power. The plates, which were the history and religion of a now extinct religious group of people, were presented to Smith by an angel named Moroni who was once a mortal man living at the time the plates were created. Smith was to translate and compile the writings into a book. The purpose of the book was '…to show unto the remnant of the house of Israel what great things the Lord hath done for their fathers;..and also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations”.
The story is of one family of a man named Lehi who was a prophet of God living about 600 BCE in Jerusalem. God directed Lehi to remove himself and his family from Jerusalem shortly before the fall of that city to the Babylonians in 586 BCE. to a place He would show them. After a period of wandering in the desert, Lehi and his family found themselves in a green, well watered and lush place at the edge of a great sea where they rested and would be instructed to prepare for a long voyage. God then directs the faithful son Nephi to build boats in which the family would travel to a new land. LDS commentators say that new land was South America near the isthmus Panama. The book does not say but rather gives a general description, which could very well be near present day Mesoamerica. During their voyage, God speaks to, directs Lehi, and comforts the small group.
Shortly after their arrival in the new land, two of Lehi's sons, who had been unruly and rebellious, broke away from the family. One son, Laman, who had been the leader and prime instigator, rejected the leadership of his younger and godly brother Nephi, his ways and religion, and takes on the ways of the indigenous population. Over time, they completely separated themselves from the rest of the family and eventually became their enemies. The story followed chronologically, the religious life of the Nephites, as they came to call themselves. Much like as happened in ancient Israel, God spoke to and directed the righteous people. They recorded these events on plates and kept them as a sacred record. At the time the book ends, about 200 AD, the Nephites too had become warlike and ungodly and were destroyed by their even more warlike and ungodly enemies.
Among the more intriguing story lines in the book is the advent of Jesus Christ. At the time of Jesus’ crucification, he came to the people in the new land and lived among them for three days. I assume it was the three days he was in the tomb. After which, the people were peaceful and prosperous for a period of two hundred years. However, the righteous Nephites once again began taking up arms in response to the provocations of their enemies. In the end, the entire population of the once godly people had become loathsome and cold hearted, rejecting God and His prophets. In the end, they were destroyed leaving but one sole survivor, their prophet and leader Moroni. Moroni abridged the whole history of his people and preserved it on the plates, which he later delivered to Joseph Smith to translate. The name Mormon, by the way, comes from the father of Moroni who was likewise a prophet and keeper of the plates prior to Moroni receiving stewardship of them. Mormons say the Bible is the story of what happened in ancient Israel and the Book of Mormon tells us why they happened.
An interesting thing I think most readers will pick up on is the writing style. This seems like a compilation of multiple texts rather than one work by one person. It is full of arcane Old Testament references we don’t see used even in classical texts. To say this book is from the fertile imagination of one poorly educated back woods farm boy, as some have said, is not a credible statement.
To this writer’s thinking, this could not have been the product of even the most well educated person living in America during the first decades of the nineteenth century. Is this book as it claims, the word of God to the people of the world now living? Readers will have to make the call themselves. One thing is certain. Joseph Smith Jr. didn’t make it up. Nether did anyone else associated with him at the time of his life. This is a sophisticated work beyond the skills of any writer I know of. It is not in the style of any of the classical writers of any century let along those of the nineteenth century.
